Intent for Reading​

At PPS, we are committed to nurturing a lifelong love of reading in every child. We believe that reading is the foundation of learning—opening doors to imagination, curiosity and knowledge. Our goal is to develop confident, fluent readers who not only read for pleasure but also achieve excellence.​

Our reading curriculum is designed to build strong reading fluency through high-quality phonics teaching and regular opportunities to practise and apply skills. We equip children with the tools they need to read with accuracy, understanding and expression.​

Beyond fluency, we value the power of discussion. We encourage children to explore texts deeply, share ideas and engage in meaningful conversations that develop comprehension and critical thinking. By making connections to themselves, the wider world, and other texts, children learn to 'think as readers' and appreciate the richness of language.​

At the heart of our approach are carefully chosen, engaging texts that inspire wonder, enjoyment, and curiosity. Through these texts, we aim to create a culture of reading where every child feels the excitement and expectation of discovering something new.​
